The legendary Wayne Rooney has called time off from international football retiring as England's all time leading goalscorer after rejecting a recall by current England manager Gareth Southgate.
Rooney retires having won 119 international caps for England. As a 18-year old, he made his debut for the senior squad on the 12th of February 2003. His first major tournament and impact came at Euro 2004 finishing with 4 goals.
Wayne's 100th international cap came on the 15th of November 2014 against Slovenia which he marked by scoring his 44th international goal via a penalty.
He broke Sir Booby Charlton's all time record by netting his 50th international goal in a 2-0 win against Switzerland on the 8th of September 2015.
His final appearance for England came against Scotland on the 11th of November 2016. As performances weren't improving at club level, he wasn't recalled by the Southgate until and after he began picking up form for his new club Everton.
Rooney now mainly wants to concentrate on his club career. He himself would want the England team to continue improving and would hope that someone someday breaks his England record.
