Report

So far, it’s been a busy summer for Man City; fullbacks have come and gone. The club has announced the signing of Brazilian fullback Danilo from Real Madrid having beaten off competition from Chelsea and Juventus.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola promised competition for places in the starting XI and Danilo arrival increases competition for the Right back role. City’s moved for Danilo due to his versatility which will be a great advantage for their busy schedule this season.

Career Statistics

In Europe, Danilo has played for 2 major clubs in his career; FC Porto and Real Madrid.

Having been a regular right back for Porto, he went on to make 137 appearances which is quite impressive. Danilo has found the net 12 times with 15 assists. With these performances, he was tipped to become the best Right back in Europe and was linked with a number of clubs.

A move to Spanish giants Real Madrid followed. He provided competition for first choice role with Dani Carvajal but it did not go as per his expectations. In 2 seasons, he made just 56 appearances, managing score 3 goals & 9 assists. Last season, he managed just 25 appearances, 24 of them were starts in all competitions. He impressed in the Champions league semi-final 2nd leg against Atletico Madrid, but missed out in the final.

Despite that, he won a La Liga winner and is also a back-to-back Champions League winner.
In the coming years, he could also be first choice for the Brazilian national side after already winning 15 caps.

Danilo’s versatility

At Madrid, Danilo couldn’t rise to his full potential due to a lack of play time. He was always second fiddle to Carvajal in almost all competitions. This led to a lack of concentration and confidence in his abilities. But currently, Danilo would be one of the fewer versatile fullbacks in Europe. For first choice at right back, Danilo will face fierce competition from Kyle Walker and both of them will be rotated by the manager whenever necessary.

Currently, there is a position vacant at the club; left back and Danilo is adaptable to it. But with a reported deal for Benjamin Mendy on the verge of completion, Danilo won’t be first choice at left back too.

Danilo can also be transformed into a regular defensive midfielder, a position no manager has played him in the past. But with City having defensive midfield crisis, will Pep be willing to transform Danilo into a midfielder?

At Man City, Danilo can find his best form he once had in his Porto days. Playing in the Premier League will be a new challenge for him and he needs to keep his mind focused every single week.

Wishing him all the best for his future!!!
