A Cristiano Ronaldo less Real Madrid comfortably beat Barcelona 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, trashing them 5-1 on aggregate to lift their record 10th Spanish Super Cup.
After winning their previous fixture 1-3, Real had to just put in a solid defensive display which they did against an armature Barcelona starting XI.
Starting Line Ups
Real Madrid replaced Bale, Isco and Casemiro to keep them fresh for their opening week fixture. Vasquez and Asensio replaced the wingers after putting in an impressive performance last week. Modric was restored to the 4-3-3 line up.
Barcelona started with an odd 3-5-2 formation with Messi and Suarez as their prime attackers. It wasn't going to work especially as Barcelona already needed to score 3 goals before the game began.
Wonderkid Marco Asnesio who is really making a name for himself, brought the game to life with a stunning strike in the 4th minute from 25 yards out. If he keeps this run going, he will be the best player in Europe in the future, no doubt.
Karim Benzema doubled Real's advantage after fantastic work by Marcelo on the left wing as he struck home a superb low volley and that was that, Real went on to win the Super Cup and manager Zidane lifted his 2nd trophy of the new season.
With Barcelona needing to score 5 goals, they weren't even able to score one past Real's firm defense. They need to bring in attacking players before the window closes or else they won't even come close to a title challenge.
