Report
The
Europa League winners have secured their 3rd signing this window and
it could prove to be their most important one. Nemanja Matic, Serbia’s
defensive enforcer and Premier League winner joins the club for a 40 Million
fee.
United
haven’t had a solid holding midfielder to control the midfield way back since
club legend Roy Keane. Matic’s arrival shows significance in Mourinho’s
approach for the club and future ambitions.
Matic
was signed back by Mourinho in his Chelsea tenure and was instrumental in their
2014/15 title success. Last season too, he helped Chelsea clinch the Premier
League title under Antonio Conte. With the arrival of Bakayoko, Matic was no
longer first choice and Mourinho snapped him.
Career
Statistics
- Played for 2 major European clubs in his career; Chelsea and Benfica
- In his first stint with Chelsea, he managed just one whole season
- Was loaned out before permanently signing for Benfica
- Spent 3 full seasons with Benfica
- He won the Portuguese League title and the Portuguese Cup
- He was re-signed for Chelsea by Jose Mourinho
- In his first whole season; won the Premier League title & the EFL Cup
- Was Chelsea’s anchor man
- Another League title followed in 2017,
- Played alongside N’golo Kante
- He made a total of 123 PL appearances, scoring 4 goals
- For a defensive midfielder, he has an impressive 18 assists
- Last season, he made 40 appearances in all competitions
- Scored twice and assisted 9 times
- Already made his debut for the club in their final pre-season game.
Matic
– The Defensive Enforcer
- Among the fewer complete holding midfielders in Europe
- One of the key defensive players for Chelsea’s title successes in the past 3 seasons
- Previously described as a midfield ‘beast’ by Jose Mourinho
- Nemanja is a 6ft 5in tall powerful midfield enforcer
- He could be the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League
- He has the most important quality that a Jose Mourinho player should have; playing experience
- He is left footed, something that Man Utd have lacked in midfield since a long time
- Also important on both ends of set plays
- Can also assist and create goals from time to time
The
Manchester United midfield
The
team lacked defensive midfield stability but that will disappear after Matic’s
arrival. In Away games, against the Premier League big boys, Matic can bring
back stability in Mourinho’s dream 3 man midfield. Matic at the base partnered
with Herrera can help get the best out of Paul Pogba. All 3 players will be
rotated in the club’s Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
Nemanja
Matic isn’t the first famous Nemanja to grace the club, former iconic captain
Nemanja Vidic left a legacy behind and Matic would want to continue it and
become a fan favorite. It’s fair to say that Mourinho has finally got his man
to help him guide the team to multiple titles.
Wishing
him all the best with his future!!!
