Arsenal win 4-1 on penalties
Last
Sunday saw a thrilling contest between the 2016/17 Premier League and FA Cup
Champions. Chelsea and Arsenal both London clubs went back and forth as
eventually Arsenal overcame their rivals and won their record 15th
Community Shield.
Both
teams began with a strong starting Xi and similar 3-4-3 formations but the
Chelsea bench had limited options compared to Arsenal. Former Gunner Cesc
Fabregas started in the Chelsea midfield.
Key
Events:
Nothing
much happened in the first half with both teams going back and forth trying to
find an opening. Arsenal captain Per Mertsacker suffered an injury and Arsene
Wenger introduced his new signing Sead Kolasinac to the game.
Come
the start of the second half, Chelsea struck with Victor Moses finding space
via set play to give Chelsea the lead.
As
the game was progressing, both managers began making substitutions, Arsenal with
offensive changes and Chelsea with defensive ones. Unfortunately, Chelsea
lacked defensive options on the bench.
In
the 80th minute, Chelsea winger Pedro committed a dangerous challenge
on Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka for which he saw a straight red card and the whole
momentum of the game began to shift in Arsenal’s favor.
The
set piece following the foul was converted by new boy Kolasinac after Chelsea
players had a serious lack of concentration. Arsenal started to look for the
win but the match headed to penalties.
Chelsea’s
second penalty was horribly missed by the goalkeeper of all people, Thibaut Courtois.
Some thought that he was trying to shoot a goal kick after that miss.
Their
3rd penalty was another disaster with Chelsea’s new Golden Boy
Alvaro Morata squaring is ball way towards the bottom left corner and handing
Arsenal the advantage.
Arsenal
scored all their four penalties with Walcott, Monreal, Chamberlain and Olivier
Giroud scoring the decisive kick to clinch Arsenal’s 9th consecutive
victory at Wembly and the 2017 Community Shield.
