Everton signing players this transfer window is no surprise. They have just swooped in for another one by signing Curacao international Cuco Martina after his Southampton contract expired.

Martina was one of the players Everton manager Ronald Koeman had signed in his final season as Southampton manager. So he knows the impact Martina will bring to the squad. He is expected to provide backup for Everton teammate Seamus Coleman who has been sidelined with a broken leg.

Career Statistics 

Martina has made 234 appearances in his professional career, scoring twice and assisting 5 times. Before his Southampton career, Martina used to play his football in Holland’s first and second tier.

Since signing for Southampton he has made 36 senior appearances, 24 coming in the Premier League. His only goal for the club was the stunning strike against Arsenal on Boxing Day. He also has experience playing in the Europa League, a competition Everton will be a part of this season if they qualify for the group stages.

Martina’s versatility will be crucial for Everton in case they have long term absentees in defense this season. He can play as a centre back and also as an emergency Left back whenever necessary. It’s still surprising that Southampton decided against renewing Martina’s contract, but Everton have got a great backup option for that role.
