Uruguay finally kicked into gear in their world cup campaign with an emphatic 3-0 victory over hosts Russia, to move top of Group A and also recording their 3rd straight shutout.

Prior to this game, Uruguay's attacking prowesses were questioned after consecutive 1-0 wins, but this win replicates a pure statement that the team possesses a fierce attacking unit combined with a sound defensive unit.

On his 100th international cap, Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera also became the country's record appearance maker in World Cup finals with 14 appearances.

Uruguay took the lead in the 10th minute through Luis Suarez who drilled home a low clever free-kick past the keeper.

Moments later it was 2-0 after Diego Laxlat's 25-yard shot took a wicked deflection on its way from Denis Cheryshev, leaving the keeper stranded.

It got worse for the hosts as they got reduced down to 10-men as the debuting Russian Right back Igor Smolnikov received a 2nd yellow card for the early exit.

Thereafter, Uruguay took control of the game and got their reward in the 90th minute as Edinson Cavani who had missed many shots early on, tapped in the Russian keeper's ricochet for his first goal of the tournament.
