Arsenal got a comeback 3-1 win at home to FC Koln

AC Milan, Nice & Zenit all scored 5 away goals in their group games

Everton were stunned 3-0 away at Atalanta

Lazio were 2-3 victors away at Vitesse

Real Sociedad convincingly beat Rosenberg 4-0

Matchday 1

The Europa League completed its first round of group stage fixtures on Thursday. The 12 groups saw the 48 teams register 65 goals, with 16 teams picking up their first wins and the other 8 fixtures ending in stalemate. 

Let's first look at the results and review 10 of the most notable fixtures on the night.

Spanish side Villareal began their Europa League campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory against Astana to go top of Group A.

The hosts opened the scoring after Jaume Costa's clipped through ball was calmly finished off by Nikola Sansone.

Mid 2nd half, Astana got their equalizer courtesy of Yuri Logvinenko's powerful header.

But just 7 minutes later, Villareal scored twice within 2 minutes as substitutes Cedric Bakambu & Denis Cheryshev rounded-off the sides fine home display.

AC Milan made an emphatic statement on their return to European football after scoring 5 away goals at Austria Vienna to beat them 1-5.

Milan were up 3-0 in the first 20 minutes, thanks to their summer signings. Hakan Calhonoglu scored a scorching shot rifling the top corner to give Milan the lead and set up 2 goals on the night.

Andre Silva marked his European debut for Milan with a perfect hat-trick in the 56th minute. Substitute Suso added Milan's 5th goal on the night, 8 mins later to send them top of Group D.

Italian side Atalanta made their return to European football after a 26-year absence by handing Premier League side Everton a shock 3-0 defeat on the night.

The hosts managed to score 3 goals within 18 minutes starting from the 27th one with Alejandro "Papu" Gomez scoring their best one on the night. 

This victory has taken Atalanta onto 3 points at the top of Group E and Everton are rock bottom.

Lyon were denied an opening day victory in the Europa League group stages as home side Apollon scored in 2nd half injury time as the game ended 1-1.

With a goal less first half, Lyon took the lead in the 53rd minute as Memphis Depay scored from the penalty spot.

But, Apollon made their home advantage count and had to wait until the 93rd minute in injury time as Adrian Sardinero found the net to keep Apollon unbeaten in 8 European games.

Alexis Sanchez inspired an Arsenal comeback in the 2nd half, after they began their Europa League campaign with a 3-1 victory against FC Koln at home. This was Arsenal's first ever involvement and victory in the Europa League under manager Arsene Wenger.

The away side took the lead within the first 10 minutes after Jhon Cordoba saw his lobbing 40 yard effort beat Davide Ospina to hand Koln the lead.


Arsenal, responded in the 2nd half after substitute Sead Kolasinac thumped home a volley to level the game on the night.

Alexis Sanchez completed Arsenal's comeback after curling a fantastic effort from the edge of the box. Hector Bellerin added a 3rd from close range to hand Arsenal, the win and 3 points to got top of Group H.

French side Marseille won their opening group stage game of the season after a narrow 1-0 victory against Konyaspor to take their tally to 3 Home wins in Europe this season.

New signing Adil Rami was able to find the net in the 48th minute to bring Marseille top of Group I on 3 points.

French side Nice managed to pick up their first win in four away UEFA games after their 1-5 demolition of Zulte Waregem.

Alassane Plea scored a brace within 20 minutes of the first half to comfortably hand Nice the advantage. Dante added a 3rd just before the hour mark.


The home side got a goal back in the 2nd half through Aaron Leya Iseka.

But, Nice established further dominance ahead after Allan Saint-Maximin scored Nice's fourth goal and Mario Ballotelli added a 5th to confirm Nice's opening day win of the group stages.

Italian side Lazio came back twice from one goal leads to win their opening day fixture against Dutch side Vitesse 2-3.

The hosts were first to take the lead which was handed by Tim Matavz for the first half, only to be cancelled out Marco Parolo's superb volley.


Bryan Linssen restored Vitesse's lead in the 57th minute which was later equalized 10 minutes later by Ciro Immobile.

But, in the 75th minute, Alessandro Murgia managed to hold off a defender and fire Lazio to their first lead on the night, enough to help them get their first win in Group K.

Russian side FC Zenit handed Vardar their joint highest home defeat in Europe, crushing them 0-5 to move top of Group L.

Aleksandr Kokorin made his impact in the first half, scoring 2 headed goals in the first 21 minutes, then laying off the ball for Artem Dzyuba.

Branislav Ivanovic gave Zenit a 4 goal lead after a tidy finish & Emiliano Rigoni's neat flick added their 5th goal late on.

Spanish side Real Sociedad got a victory at home on the group stages opening day after dominantly disposing off Rosenberg 4-0.

Former Real Madrid defender Diego Llorente scored the opening goal through a simple tap-in. David Zurutuza scored in the next minute after heading home a cross. Jorgen Skjelvik turned the ball into his own net to hand Sociedad a 3-0 lead at half time.

Llorente rounded of Sociedad's perfect night by scoring his 2nd and Sociedad's 4th goal via a header taking them to 2nd place in Group L, joint on 3 points with Zenit.
